Papers consist mainly of sixteen letters from Beach to Elizabeth L.T. Gilchrist of Philadelphia (Pa.), but also include miscellaneous items and a letter (1885) from Robert Ralston Jones (b. 1850) concerning Beach and Lamboll family genealogy. Letters (1822-1823) from Beach at Charleston to Gilchrist concern religious and family matters and contain numerous references to the leaders and members of the Congregational Church, as well as to events in Charleston, South Carolina during the summer of 1822, particularly the slave insurrection planned by Denmark Vesey, his trial and execution. Includes references to Vesey, Rolla Bennett, and other conspirators' character, rumors circulating about the insurrection, changes in the City Guard subsequent to it, the tendency to blame Northern merchants residing in town, an accident that occurred at the hanging, and Beach's fears of a backlash against religious persons because of the religious affiliation of conspirators.
